RATING: 5/5

The plotline is simple: a brilliant lawyer loses her phone, and a caller offers to return it if she dines with him. Freshly divorced Diane is trying to move on and is vulnerable to the smooth-talking Alexandre. When they first meet she is stunned to find that the high-profile architect is only 4 foot 6 inches tall. Against all the odds, they hit it off and start dating, and each situation into which Diane introduces Alexandre progressively becomes more and more awkward as people struggle to accept their relationship. Throughout it all, Alexandre endures the stares with good-humoured acceptance despite the insensitivity of people towards those who are different.

One of my favourite things about this movie is the way in which it contrasts the naturally comic moments of the film with deeper exciting moments about the issues of disability and the attitudes towards "les personnes handicapées". Critics have complained that the digital effects to down-size Dujardin are clumsy.  And while this is true, it's really only noticeable if you search for it, and even if you do find it, it's straightforward to ignore; this film has a lot more going for it than minor hiccups with experimental technology and certainly shouldn't be spoilt because of it.

Overall, this movie is a delightful romance that doubles as a serious essay on dealing with difference. It is heart-warming and awkward, light and pleasant.
