RATING: 4/5

"Jenny, a talented doctor, refuses to open the door of her practice to a mysterious late-night caller. The next morning, she learns that the caller was a girl who has been found dead, and the police have no way of identifying her. Shocked and guilt-stricken by the news, Jenny resolves to discover the name of the girl, so she will not be buried anonymously and to ensure she doesn't disappear as if she had never lived."

A dead girl. A troubled doctor. An illegal investigation. A shady prostitution business orchestrated from an Internet Café. Mix it all, and you arrive at the premise of La Fille Inconnue.

For me, this film errs on the better side of French movies I have seen, an intriguing crime/thriller plot, with the lack of music highlighting drama and tension and an unusual ending. The character of Jenny is complicated yet entirely relatable, her unyielding desire to bring honour to the death of the young girl killed is heroic - yet there is an underlying selfishness to her actions.

Yes, it is true that Jenny's determination to find the name of the girl killed and have her buried is honourable and just, it is plausible to suggest that in reality, Jenny's reasons for wanting this so much are merely for her own selfish desires. Namely, to remove herself of the guilt she feels for not opening the door that night; something so small, yet, could possibly have saved her life. Although Jenny does find the name of the young girl, and her subsequent sister in the process, it was not her initial desire to see her family. Finding the name of the girl clears Jenny's conscience and allows her to move on, yet it does nothing for the girl who is still dead.

Although there are distinct disheartening moments of the film, there are also light-hearted moments of the movie like when the two boys sing their adoration of Doctor Jenny and altogether creates a nice mix between the melancholic nature of the rest of the film.

The actors in this movie are very receptive and hold the attention of the audience right to the end of the film, the movie is well shot, and its' underlying moral message of good vs evil is well received and demonstrated. As somebody in the process of achieving fluency in French, this movie was not particularly hard to follow on to, even without subtitles. I would recommend this film to anybody who enjoyed the simple joys of cinema.
